Certain regions of both Italy and America experience what is known to locals as the "Lake Effect."
In the United States (you know who you are, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Western New York), the "Lake Effect" refers to the accumulation of moisture in the air over the Great Lakes region that inflicts upon its hapless inhabitants five consecutive months a year of grey skies and snow. In Italy, "Lake Effect" refers to a balmy microclimate of mild winters, sunshine, flowers in January, palm trees, botanical gardens, 19th century villas, and wealthy German retirees all nestled snugly at the foot of the Alps, with a view of their snow-dusted peaks and world-class skiing 15 minutes away.
